Capturing Authentic Moments and Timeless Portraits in a Historic Setting

As a wedding photographer, I’m passionate about capturing the essence of a wedding day, blending the raw, authentic beauty of documentary photography with the timeless elegance of fine art portraiture. This approach was perfectly suited for a recent fall wedding at the stunning Glen Manor House in Portsmouth, Rhode Island.
A Historic Backdrop for Real Moments and Elegant Portraits
Glen Manor Mansion, with its elegant architecture and breathtaking gardens overlooking the Sakonnet River, provided a truly magnificent backdrop. It became the stage for a story – this couple’s love story, told through genuine moments, unscripted interactions, and carefully crafted portraits.
Observing and Guiding: A Balanced Approach
My approach for this wedding was a balance of observation and gentle guidance. While I prioritized capturing candid moments as they unfolded, I also recognized the importance of creating beautiful, timeless portraits that the couple and their families would cherish. This meant:
- Documentary Moments: Blending seamlessly into the background, observing and anticipating moments as they unfolded. Capturing the anticipation, the connection, and the celebration through unscripted interactions.
- Guided Portraits: Directing the couple and their wedding party for a moderate amount of posed portraits, focusing on flattering light, composition, and posing that felt natural and authentic to their personalities. This wasn’t about stiff, traditional poses, but rather about creating images that felt both elegant and genuine.

A Second Photographer: Two Perspectives, One Vision
Having a second photographer was invaluable. It allowed us to capture both the candid moments and the posed portraits efficiently, ensuring that no aspect of the day was missed. While one of us might be focusing on capturing candid moments during cocktail hour, the other could be setting up and capturing family portraits.
Natural Light and the Art of Portraiture

The grand windows of Glen Manor Mansion were a gift, providing beautiful natural light for both the candid moments and the portraits. For the portraits, I paid close attention to the direction and quality of the light, using it to create flattering and artistic images. While embracing natural light, I also subtly guided the couple’s posing to ensure they looked their best.

I work with their teams across multiple venues and they never disappoint.
The Gardens: A Natural Setting for Both Candid and Posed Images

The gardens provided a beautiful natural setting for both candid moments and posed portraits. While I captured the couple’s natural interactions, I also took the opportunity to guide them into poses that highlighted the beauty of the surroundings and their connection.
A Story Told Through a Blend of Styles
This wedding at Glen Manor Mansion was captured through a balanced approach, blending the authenticity of documentary photography with the artistry of fine art portraiture. This allowed me to tell the complete story of the day, capturing both the raw emotions and the timeless beauty of the occasion.
