As a Newport, RI wedding photographer, few places get me as excited to shoot as OceanCliff—especially in winter. This January wedding was nothing short of magical. With holiday decorations still adorning the venue paired with ocean views, it created the perfect backdrop for a romantic, winter celebration.

A Chilly Day Full of Warm Moments

Yes, it was freezing. But this couple? Absolute legends. They braved the cold winds with smiles and laughter to capture those iconic OceanCliff wedding portraits—you know the ones, the famous arch, historic stone walls, and that coastal Newport elegance that just can’t be found anywhere.

Getting Ready: Two Perspectives

One of my favorite ways to tell a wedding story is through dual coverage. While I was with the bride and her bridal party capturing those intimate moments preparing for the day, my second photographer was with the groom and his crew. From moments like the bride and her girls enjoying some champagne, to candid shots of the groom dialing in the final touches with nervous excitement, we made sure no memory went uncaptured.

OceanCliff in the Winter: A Photographer’s Playground

OceanCliff’s architecture and layout require a strong understanding of light. It’s what sets apart average coverage from stunning, dynamic photography. The venue’s ambient lighting shifts throughout the day—from the dim hallways and romantic candlelit corners to brighter prep rooms and that gorgeously lit ceremony and reception space.

Having photographed other weddings at OceanCliff, I know how to navigate these lighting transitions to keep skin tones flattering and the mood consistent. Whether it’s adjusting to winter’s early sunset or flash to elevate the reception’s ambiance, the key is experience and flexibility.

A Dream Team of Vendors

This day wouldn’t have been as seamless without the amazing vendor team:

  • Sunday Social Events absolutely nailed the planning and design. Every detail felt intentional, elegant, and true to the couple.
  • Roll Out Events Photobooth was a hit with the guests and kept the laughs coming all night.
  • Elite Entertainment had the dance floor packed. No exaggeration—this crowd danced. From the first song to the last, there was an electric energy in the room.
  • Even the OceanCliff staff got in on the fun and jumped in front of the camera for a few shots, which speaks volumes about the vibe of the day.

Family, Love, and Connection

What stood out most—beyond the stunning views and incredible vendor support—was the couple’s families. The love, joy, and connection were palpable all day. It was one of those weddings that reminded me why I do what I do. The emotional moments, the unexpected laughter, the people coming together in celebration—those are the memories worth preserving.
